McCOOK, Neb. -- Samuel Castro Paz, age 81, of McCook passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
Samuel was born Feb. 27, 1933, to parents Jesus and Juanita (Castro) Paz in Minatare, Nebraska. He was one of six children. Growing up Samuel attended school in Minatare, graduating from Minatare High School in 1953. He then went on to attend the National School of Meat Cutting School in Toledo, Ohio, in 1956.
Samuel enlisted in the United States Army in 1953. He served as a Private during the Korean War before being honorably discharged in 1955.
On May 30, 1958, Samuel married Frances (Garcia) Paz in McCook. To this union four sons were born. The family made their home in McCook, where Samuel was employed by Safeway Grocery Store for 25 years. Following his retirement from Safeway, Samuel enjoyed working at Mac's Drive-In until his health failed in February 2014.
Samuel was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, McCook Elk's Club 1434 and the Eagle's Club. Throughout the years his hobbies included fishing, hunting, garden and yard work, and woodworking. He especially enjoyed building birdhouses. Samuel also spent time traveling to his grandchildren's many school events and activities. Gambling and bowling were also among his favorite past times.
Samuel was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Tony, Hank, Duke and Freddie; brother -in-law, Manual Guzman; and nephew, Jessie Guzman.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Paz of McCook; sons, Eddie (Cathy) Paz of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Paul (Judy Mercer) Paz of McCook, David (Rana) Paz of Lincoln, Nebraska, John (Julie) Paz of McCook and Michael (Krystal Bartlett) Paz of Brush, Colorado; sister, Carolyn Guzman of Minatare; grandchildren, Michael Paz, Corey Paz, Renae Paz (Andrew Weaver), Olivia Paz, Eric Paz, Kaylee Paz, Lacey Paz, Joey Paz and Isabel Paz; great-grandchildren, Conner and Carter Weaver; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 5, 2014, from 1-7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.
Rosary will also be on Thursday, June 5, 2014, 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Friday, June 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Father Andrew Heaslip officiating.
