MCCOOK, Neb. -- Edwin Black passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014, at his home, Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska, at the age of 98.
He was born Dec. 11, 1915, to Clarence and Jennie (Brintanll) Black in a sod house on the farm his parents homesteaded south of Dresden, Kansas.
Edwin and Leola Broyles were married in Oct. of 1938 in Dresden. They moved to Idaho and worked as farm laborers. Their daughter, Sharon, was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Boise, Idaho. Edwin later worked in an ammunition plant in Sidney, Nebraska. Their son, Lyle, was born there on March 6, 1944. After moving to Oberlin, Edwin worked for Pepsi-Cola for eight years and as the custodian at the Oberlin Elementary School for 28 years, retiring in 1981. Leola passed away August 10, 1984.
Edwin remarried to Doris (Wilson) Ockerman in August of 1985 in Farmington, New Mexico. Doris passed away Feb. 7, 2009.
Edwin was a lifetime member of the Assembly of God church. In Oberlin, he served the church as a board member for many years, Sunday School Superintendent, treasurer, and teacher. He made a trip to the Holy Land in Israel after his 80th birthday. Church was a very important part of his life.
Survivors include his son, Lyle Black, West Hollywood, California; son-in-law, LeRoy Stevenson, Moorhead, Minnesota; adopted daughter, Lois Beneda and husband, Owen, McCook; one granddaughter and her husband, Ronda and Jeremy Pinkerman and great-grandchildren, Abby, Mia, and Sidny Pinkerman, Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; sister, Veda Heisel, Lenora; and many nephews and nieces.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sharon Mockry Stevenson of Oberlin; two spouses, Leola and Doris; two brothers, Eldon and Keith; sister, Louise Wilson; grandson, Monty Mockry; and stepdaughter, Judy Ockerman.
Funeral Services will be Monday, June 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin, Kansas, with Rev. Royce Leitner officiating. Burial will be in the Oberlin Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. and after 8 a.m. on Monday. Memorial contributions may be addressed to the Edwin Black Memorial Fund.
