MINNEOLA, Kan. -- Hubert G. "Pete" King of Minneola, originally of McCook, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, at the Minneola District Hospital. He was 89 years old.
Pete was born on Jan. 18, 1925, to parents, Wilbur L. and Eva R. (Swafford) King in Cullison, Kansas. He graduated from Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. On June 7, 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 26, 1945.
On Dec. 30, 1951, he was united in marriage to Virginia R. "Ginny" Meredith in Salina, Kansas. They moved to the McCook community in 1964. Pete was in sales both retail and wholesale for 47 years. The last 27 were spent as a traveling fabric salesman before retiring.
He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking and carpentry work.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Virginia, on July 9, 2010; his daughter, Pamula Olson; grandson, Nathanial Buckley; parents, Wilbur and Eva King; five sisters, Martha, Doris, Clarice, Ionia and Cleo; and five brothers, Ralph, Gerald, Barton, Samuel and Dale.
Survivors include his son, Scott King and wife, Julie, of Evergreen, Colorado, daughter, Debra and husband, Dave Buckley, of Minneola; two brothers, Marvin "Jack" King of Littleton, Colorado, and Homer "Lucky" King of Lakewood, Colorado; son-in-law, Randy Olson of Johnstown, Colorado; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in his name.
A memorial service will be Saturday, May 17, 2014, 11 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Kip Ryherd officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors.
