KEARNEY, Nebraska -- Charles Legates, Jr., 83, of Kearney, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at the Kearney First Baptist Church with Pastor Stan Murdoch officiating. Inurnment will follow at Kearney Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family care of the funeral home.

Charles Legates, Jr. was born July 18, 1930, in Harrington, Delaware, to Charles Legates, Sr. and Naomi (Melvin) Legates. He was united in marriage to Rose Lee Farson on July 1, 1956, in Blair, Nebraska. Charles was employed as a mechanic for many years. He enjoyed camping and fishing. Charles was a member of the First Baptist church in Wilsonville, Nebrska.

Survivors include his sons, John Legates and wife, Jennifer of Grand Island, Gary Legates and wife, Jamie of Kearney, Charles E. Legates and wife, Glenda of Kearney; daughters, Naomi Schwarz and husband, Tony of Kearney, Connie Blankenship and husband, Brian of Kearney, Bonnie Volker and husband, Bill of Kearney; grandchildren, Bryan Schwarz, Hannah and Isaiah Legates, Jared Blankenship, Samantha and Drew Volker, Elijah and Jaden Williams; great-grandchildren, Ema and Aaron Ayers, Ryhanna and Grace Simco; sister, Edith Wisseman of Virginia; nephew, Richard Gerardi and wife, Donna of Delaware.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose Lee Legates; daughter, Charlotte Legates; sister, Agnes Elliot and Myrtle Gerardi; brother, Oscar Legates; nephew, Eugene Gerardi and niece, Christine Richords.
