Naomi Corrine (Baughman) Ommert

CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska -- Naomi Ommert passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at the Cambridge Manor.

She was born Oct. 17, 1928, at the farm home northwest of Cambridge to Harry and Raychel (Saunders) Baughman. They moved northeast of Cambridge, where Naomi attended Mt. Zion School.They later moved into Cambridge, where she continued her education and graduated from high school In 1945. She was very talented in music and was a member of a vocal trio which won high honors in a national music contest in Omaha in 1942. She played the clarinet in the band.

After graduation, Naomi went to work for the REA when it was first brought to this part of Nebraska. She then went to work as a secretary for an attorney-at-law. Her next job was with the Geological Survey office as a clerk and was employed there when she married Earl Ommert in Cambridge on Feb. 9, 1947. To this union three children were born, Larry, John and Chrlsty.

Naomi was a "stay-at-home"' mother, until the middle 1950s, when she took a job at the Cambridge Post Office as a postal clerk. In the late 1960s, she opened the Fabric Shop in Cambridge with a friend and worked there for several years and later sold the shop. She then sold Avon in the area, until she went to work for the Census Bureau. She was well known for her duet singing at funerals in the area. She loved doing ceramics and sewing and never missed a chance to attend her grandchildren's music programs. Even in more recent times, she loved the music programs at the Manor and would sing along with the performers.

She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Cambridge and belonged to many of the church groups. She also served as a board member for the museum at the time it was built.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Earl in 2012; her parents and her brother, Robert.

She is survived by her children, Larry (Carol) Ommert of Cambridge, John (Robert Gentry) Ommert of Asheville, North Carolina, and Christy Hartman of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Tony) Johnson, Jeff Ommert, Tim (Chrystal) Ommert, Ryan Ommert, Kristopher (Meg) Flammang, Kyle Flammang, Karmen (Michael) Karatsonyl, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are being accepted in her name and may be left at Lockenour Jones Mortuary.

Services are Monday, March 31, 2014, 10:30 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge with Pastor Jeff Wulf officiating. Interment is at Fairview Cemetery.
