Smith plans meeting on air service Monday

McCOOK, Nebraska -- U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith is coordinating a public meeting in McCook next week to discuss and receive input pertaining to essential air service and the impacts of the new pilot training requirements. The meeting is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on Monday in the upstairs training room of the new McCook Municipal Facility on West C Street.

The meeting is being touted by city staff as a great opportunity to express concerns related to local air service to the congressman.

McCook's commercial air service provider, Great Lakes Airlines, has blamed issues with cancelled flights in 2014 on new training requirements implemented by the Department of Transportation.

Boarded passengers at McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport have fallen off significantly in 2014 after experiencing a 22 percent annual increase in 2013, according to data provided by city staff. The McCook airport boarded 18 passengers in January 2014, compared to 116 the year prior. February saw little improvement and 34 passengers were boarded for the month, compared to 149 in 2013.
