McCOOK, Nebraska -- Waldon Lee Volz, age 83, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.
Waldon was born July 31, 1930, to Edward Thomas and Bernice Walthina (Bush) Volz in York, Nebraska. He graduated in 1948 from Polk High School. He won a football scholarship as quarterback, but decided on the ministry.
He went on to New York Watchtower Bible and Tract Society in 1950, where he operated a huge rotary press printing Bibles and Bible literature. He stayed four years, then left to further his ministry in Omaha. Waldon met and on Aug 20, 1966, married Marilyn A. Johnson who raised his two sons. In 1966, the family moved to McCook and he went into business with his brother Tom Volz, establishing Volz Plumbing and Heating until retirement in 1991.
His greatest love was the ministry and serving Jehovah. The ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses filled his life. He served as an elder and gave many talks all over Nebraska and at district conventions in Lincoln.
His hobby was flying. He received his pilot's license in 1976 from Milt and Jay Johnson. After retirement he took up R.C. flying and building his own remote control planes. He was a member of the McCook R. C. Club and helped to build the runway.
He and his son, Troy, flew all the way to New York City in a single engine plane, to visit New York and the Watchtower Society. He had a full life and looked forward to the Resurrection Hope under God's Kingdom on Earth.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of McCook; son, Troy Volz and wife, Karen of Kearney; brother, Tom Volz and wife, Shirley of McCook; two grandchildren, Candice Hartley and husband, Patrick and great grandson, Dublin Fallen of Loveland, Colorado and Justin Volz of Fort Collins, Colorado; and niece, Cheryl Van Housen and husband, Dennis of Polk, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Barry Volz.
Memorial services will be Saturday, March 1, 2014, 2 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness with Elder Tim Hutchins officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or the World Wide voluntary work of Jehovah's Witnesses.
