McCOOK, Nebraska --Charles "Wayne" Waddell passed away Feb. 13, 2014, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 86 years old.
Wayne was born on Oct. 1, 1927, at Indianola to parents, Charlie and Jessie Waddell. He attended school north of Indianola and graduated from Red Willow Public Schools. Following graduation, he went on to the University of Nebraska and was on the basketball team as a freshman before transferring to McCook Junior College. While attending McCook Junior College, Wayne lettered in football, basketball and track.
He married Phyllis J. Morris on Sept. 17, 1950, in McCook. To this union three children were born.
Wayne entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 31, 1950, and served with the 40th Infantry Division on the active central front in the Korean war. He was a first sergeant in Company H of the 224th Regiment and was honorably discharged on Aug. 4, 1952.
After he returned from the service, he and Phyllis farmed north of Indianola for 30-plus years. In 1981, they moved to Indianola until 2010, when Wayne moved into Willow Ridge, then St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney and finally Hillcrest Nursing Home.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in the communities of Indianola and McCook. He was a Master Mason in Lodge No. 228 in Bartley. He served on the Indianola City Council and one term as mayor of Indianola. Wayne also served on the school boards of Indianola and Republican Valley School districts and the board of the Indianola Coop.
Music was an important part of his life. He sang at many church functions throughout the years.
He enjoyed farming, playing cards, gardening and sports, especially the Huskers.
While he lived in Indianola, he planted a very large garden which supplied many people with tomatoes and other vegetables. For his service to the community he was nominated and received "The People You Can Count On Award" through KOLN/KGIN News. In later years, he enjoyed his big screen TV and just visiting with people.
Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Dale Waddell.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Waddell of Cambridge; daughters, Debra Waddell of Republican City, Nebraska and Vicki and husband, Eugene McKain, of Trenton, son, John Waddell and wife, Peggy, of McCook; brother, Don Waddell and wife, Joan of Westminster, Colorado; sister-in-law, Dee Waddell of Southern Pines, North Carolina; grandchildren, Lisa McCormick and husband, Craig, and Ashley Allison, all of Hays, Kansas, Barry Allison Jr. and George Allison, both of McCook, Chris Sandmann of McCook; great-grandchildren, Lilianna Griffith, Brianna Griffith, Skyler McCormick, Ryder McCormick, Rayne Allison and Rosemary Allison.
Memorials may be given to to the Indianola City Park or the Indianola Methodist Church.
Visitation is today, Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, until 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb.18, 2014, 10:30 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Doug Griger officiating. Burial will follow in the Indianola Cemetery, Indianola, Nebraska.
