Shirley L. Jass

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Shirley L. Jass of McCook passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Community Hospital. She was 83 years old.

Shirley was born in Mason City, Iowa, and was adopted by parents, Edward and Hazel (Kirby) Schaffer. She graduated from Mason City High School.

On Aug. 28, 1946, Shirley married Carl Jass at Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union four children were born. They made their home on a farm for 20 years in the Mason City community. In 1974, they moved to McCook where Carl was employed by UPS and Shirley worked for TRW and Alco, besides being a busy mother and homemaker.

Shirley was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She enjoyed her many trips taken to Las Vegas, her passion for shopping, and being an ardent Denver Bronco fan. She dearly loved being with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Edward and Hazel Schaffer; and two brothers, Jack and Dan Schaffer.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Carl Jass of McCook; daughters, Norma and husband, Dale Keeney, of Trenton, Carolyn and husband, LaVern Burtis, of Diagonal, Iowa and Sally and husband, Robert May, of Oberlin, Kansas; son, Kevin Jass and wife, Patty, of Greeley, Colorado; sister, Wanda Stevens of Underwood, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; special friend Theresa and husband, Larry Steinbeck, of McCook; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family.
