ATWOOD, Kansas -- Ada Mae Mays Hawkins Schruben, 97, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 in Atwood.
She was born Oct. 7, 1916, to Charles Owen Mays and Mable Blanche Sullivan Mays on a farm in Furnace County, Nebraska, near the town of Wilsonville. She graduated from Rexford High School in Kansas in 1934.
She married Delbert Vernice Hawkins on Oct. 22, 1934, in Goodland, Kansas.
She was a member of the Mayflower Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution, the local Rebekah Lodge No. 133 and First Christian Church in Atwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Owen Mays, Dean Mays, and Delbert Mays, and three sisters, Elma Hay, Blanche Ballard, and Bessie Hadley; two husbands, Delbert V. Hawkins and Maurice E. Schruben; and a son-in-law, Ronald D. Stark.
Survivors include sons, Larry Hawkins and wife, Daphne of Sweet Springs, Missouri, Richard Hawkins and wife, Kay, of Colby, Kansas, and Gordon Hawkins and wife, Edna, of Atwood; daughters, Janis Ada Reynolds of Branson, Missouri and Ardis Stark of Atwood; sister, Elsie Bryan of Atwood; 12 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Services are Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, 10 a.m., First Christian Church, 216 6th Street, in Atwood. Interment is at Fairview Cemetery in Atwood.
Visitation is Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, 3 to 7 p.m. at Baalmann Mortuary in Atwood.
Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church, Beardsley 4-H or the Good Samaritan Society in Atwood.
