SALINA, Kansas -- Maxine Eleanor Rippen Poore, age 96, died Dec. 9, 2013, at the Pinnacle Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salina, Kansas.
Maxine was born in McCook, Nebraska, on Oct. 27, 1917, to Elmer and Nancy Lee (Campbell) Shepherd. She grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1935. She attended McCook College, where she received her Normal Training Certificate.
Maxine taught school in Culbertson for five years. On July 23, 1943, she was married to Harlan Rippen at Oberlin, Kansas. The couple farmed near Culbertson, until Harlan's death in July 17, 1968. Maxine moved back to McCook in 1970, where she worked at the Mary K dress shop from 1968 until 1986. She married Ward Poore on Jan. 15, 1975. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1983. In 2006, Maxine moved to Salina, Kansas, to be close to family.
Maxine was a charter member of the Culbertson VFW, a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. She was an excellent bridge player, hosting and playing cards with many friends. Maxine and Harlan would travel to Denver every year for the Stock Show.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Harlan and Ward; two sisters, Clara Hoppe and Blanche Hubbard; four brothers, Richard Shepherd, Clint Shepherd, Wayne Shepherd and Lee Shepherd.
Survivors include her son, Ken and wife, Phyllis Rippen of Salina, Kansas; step-son, Richard Poore of Convent Station, New Jersey; and a sister, Jean Woodruff of Loveland, Colorado.
