McCOOK, Nebraska -- Effie Arlene Carlson age 98, of McCook, died at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney on Dec. 4, 2013.

She was born near Cornell in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, on Sept. 10, 1915, to William and Ada (Terrell) Hay. She attended rural school until the fifth grade when her parents moved to Trenton.

She graduated from Trenton High School in 1922 as the Valedictorian of the class. She received her teaching certificate and taught two terms at the Clarence Silver School NW of Trenton.

On June 9, 1935, she was united in marriage to Willis (Bill) Edward Carlson at the home of her parents. The couple farmed on the Carlson home place for 9 years, then they purchased a farm southeast of Trenton. They resided there and farmed and ranched until retirement.

Effie's faith was the strength of her life. She showed the love of Christ in her daily walk. She was a faithful member of the Congregational Church in Trenton, where she also taught Sunday school. Bill and Effie served the young people of their community as 4-H leaders. She showed amazing love for every member of her family.

Effie remained on the farm for three years after Bill's death. She moved to Highland Park in 1993 and has resided there for the past 17 years. Her positive attitude and sweet spirit made her many friends.

Effie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; son Lanny, two sisters, Eula and Elsie; five brothers, Virgil, Charlie, Clarence, Gaylord and Keith.

She is survived by a son, Roger and wife Melinda of Atwood, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook, Nebraska, on Dec. 9, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Keith Reuther officiating. Interment will be in the Trenton Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Herrmann-Jones Mortuary in McCook. Memorials may be left to the Trenton Cemetery, the American Cancer Society Fund or donors choice.
