Melvin 'Mel' A. McVicker

PALISADE, Nebraska -- Melvin "Mel" A. McVicker, age 76, of Palisade, died at the El dorado Manor in Trenton on Dec. 1, 2013.

He was born in Hayes Center on Jan. 23, 1937, to Malachi and Ruth (Goucher) McVicker. He graduated from Hayes Center High school in 1954. In 1975, he married to Shirley Bailey and to this union three children were born: Ronald, Meloney and Michelle.

Mel farmed in the area for a while and worked for Hayes County for a short period. He was employed as a journeyman line man for the Southwest Public Power Company for more than 30 years. He worked for the Village of Palisade part-time after retirement. Mel served on the Palisade Fire Department for more than 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking.

In March 1993, Mel married Colleen Moreau and the couple resided in Palisade their entire married life.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; a step-son, Bryan Witt; three sisters, Catherine Curtis and husband, Ollen, Ellen Underhill and husband, John and Elsie Buckley and husband, Wendell.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen of Palisade; two daughters, Meloney McVicker of Anchorage, Alaska and Michelle and husband, Patrick of Sterling, Nebraska; son, Ronald of Springfield, Missouri; one step-daughter, Sarah Witt of Holdrege, Nebraska; one step-son, Dennis and wife, Sabrina Witt of Shamrock, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and one brother, Robert of Columbia, Tennessee.

Funeral services are Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at 10 a.m. (CST) at the Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Luke Wolford officiating. Interment will be in the Palisade Cemetery.

Visitation is at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
