Valentine L. 'Val' Beneda

OBERLIN, Kansas -- Valentine L. "Val" Beneda, 90, died Wednesday (Nov. 27, 2013), at Decatur Health Systems in Oberlin.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Kanona, Kansas, to Jerry Beneda and Bessie Janousek. He grew up in the Kanona area.

He served in the Army Air Force in WWII.

On Oct. 22, 1944, he married Phyllis Walton in Norton, Kansas, and the couple resided in Oberlin.

Val was a maintenance supervisor for the Kansas Department of Transportation and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 70 and the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Bessie Beneda, three brothers, three sisters, two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Beneda of Oberlin; his son, Ron Beneda of Oberlin; daughters, Sharon and husband, Don Spratt of London, England, and Sheryl and husband, Melvin, Solko of Davenport, Florida; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin. are pending with Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Bradley Rick officiating.

Interment will follow at the Oberlin cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin and Saturday after 8 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.
