McCOOK, Nebraska -- Louis Arvene Myers, age 95, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Willow Ridge Retirement Center in McCook, Nebraska.

Arvene was born May 6, 1918, on a farm south of Culbertson, Nebraska, to parents Alex Eugene and Vivian Viola (Haller) Myers. He had one younger brother, Gerald. The family made their home south of Culbertson. Arvene attended and graduated from Culbertson High School in 1937. Following his graduation, Arvene continued his work on the family farm.

On August 1, 1937, Arvene married Neva E. Fleming in Colby, Kansas. To this union three children were born; Richard, Cheryl and Steven. The couple raised their family on the farm south of Culbertson until moving to McCook in 1962. Arvene loved life on the farm and continued diligently maintaining his wheat and corn crops while at the same time raising cattle and hogs. He also helped maintain area phone lines and sold Farm Bureau Insurance. Arvene served as the interim manager for eight months for the McCook Co-op, he held an electrician's license, enjoyed carpentry and was the previous owner of Carpenter Breland Funeral Home (1985-2000).

Following Neva's death in June of 2000, Arvene married Mildred M. (Rann) Rucker on January 5, 2002, in McCook. They made their home in McCook until the time of his death.

Arvene was a member of the McCook Christian Church where he had served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He had served on the Community Hospital Board, a longtime member of the Good Sam's Camping Club. He was a past member of the McCook Masonic Lodge #135, York Rite Bodies and Tehama Shrine. His hobbies included his computer, camping, playing cards, gardening, investing fishing, spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed Cornhusker Football.

Arvene was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Neva; brother, Gerald Myers; and grandson, Jeffrey Myers.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Myers of McCook; sons, Richard (Jolene) Myers of Boulder, Colorado, and Steven Myers and Billy Stanton-Myers of Boston, Massachusett; daughter, Cheryl (Gerald) Beckenhauer of McCook, five grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; step daughters, Carol Schuman of Imperial, Nebraska, and Connie (Gary) Ward of Phoenix, Arizona; step son, Jerry (Janet) Rucker of Denver, Colorado; sister in law, Virginia Myers of Lincoln, Nebraska; 11 step-grandchildren, 22 step-great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephew and a host of friends.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, 11 a.m., at the McCook Christian Church with Jerry and Scott Beckenhauer officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Allen Myers officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the McCook Christian Church, Nebraska Christian College or the McCook Community Foundation Fund.
