Billy 'Bill' Goodnight

May 9, 1932 - Nov. 25, 2013

OBERLIN, Kansas -- Billy Jean "Bill" Goodnight was born May 9, 1932, in Cullison, Kansas, to William McKinley and Flora (Braden) Goodnight. He passed away at his daughter's home in Oberlin, Kansas, on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2013, at the age of 81.

Bill was reared on a farm near Cullison along with three brothers and three sisters. He attended a Kiowa County school. His family attended the United Methodist Church.

He moved to Oberlin, Kansas, in 1969. For more than 40 years, Bill owned and operated Goodnight Ditching and Construction. Over the years, he enjoyed repairing and selling equipment. He was a licensed pilot, liked to fish, and loved history. Bill enjoyed watching the Antique Road Show on television and loved attending auctions.

He is survived by a daughter, Catherine Goodnight Howard of Oberlin; a stepson, Mitchell Pickett and wife, Rhonda of Hayes Center, Nebraska; four stepdaughters, Marsha Smith, MD, of Oberlin, Rhonda Barth and husband, Mick of Oberlin, Valerie Farris of Oberlin and Wanda Farr of Jennings; three grandchildren, Gene Goodnight of Wichita, Kansas, Marshall Goodnight of Dodge City, Kansas, and Aaron Goodnight of Wichita; in addition to numerous step-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, other relatives, and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Mabel Goodnight; brothers, Leonard and Ray Goodnight; and sisters, Leona Davis, Lena Brent and Mildred "Fay" Nichols.

A graveside service will be Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Sunset Cemetery in Cullison, Kansas. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin.
