New standards raise price of county road

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Red Willow County will have to come up with an additional $9,600 for dirt and surveying to finish its McCook North federal aid road project.

Commissioners learned Monday at their weekly meeting that the late-1990s survey for shouldering and earthwork and the amount of dirt needed for embankments along the 21⁄2-mile asphalt road do not meet today's standard for four-foot shoulders. An updated survey and additional dirt and earthwork will cost $48,025 -- of which the county is responsible for 20 percent, or approximately $9,600.

Each of the additional 3,608 cubic yards of dirt cost $12.75. The additional work adds 10 working days to the project.

The bid was awarded Dec. 13, 2012, to Paulsen Inc. of Cozad, Nebraska, which is on site now. The project includes a six-inch overlay of asphalt on the already armor-coated county road from the north end of East 11th to the four-way intersection 21⁄2 miles north.

Red Willow County will now pay $301,600 of the "McCook North" project; the federal government picks up the remainder of the now $1,448,025 million project.
