Mertice Grant Chancellor

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Mertice Grant Chancellor, 68, formerly of McCook, died Oct. 10. 2013.

He was born July 11, 1945, to Theodore M. and Darleene (Beem) Chancellor in Butte, Nebraska. He graduated from McCook High School in 1964. He also attended Gulf Coast Bible College, Houston, Texas, and McCook Beauty Academy.

He served in the Army National Guard in McCook. He married LaNora Bell Johnson in June 1965 and to this union five children were born: LaRena, Merlin, Joel, Elgin and Jenelda.

He worked for the following McCook businesses; Barney Floor Coverings, Yellow Front Checker Auto and McCook Beauty Academy. Mert opened the Dinola Café at age 19 with his brother and later was the owner/operator of The Chancellor Salon. He closed his salon in 2010 and later moved to Curtis, Nebraska, in 2012.

He was a member of the McCook Eagles Club and during his membership, served as the secretary, president and as a volunteer. He was the past president of the McCook Garden Club.

Mert loved playing cards, spending time gardening, raising canaries and especially spending time with friends and family. He especially enjoyed chats and after school ice cream with Joeseph.

Mert was chosen as the McCook Daily Gazette Father of the Year in 1995.

He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore M. Chancellor; brother, Raymond Chancellor; daughter, Jenelda; and a grandson, Bradyn and a brother-in-law, Frank Hamilton.

Survivors include his mother, Darleene Chancellor; three brothers, Dennis and wife, Charlene of Lincoln, Kenneth and wife, Rose of McCook and Timothy and wife, Toni of Chadron, Nebraska; one sister, Norene Hamilton and one sister-in-law, Helen Chancellor; three sons, Merlin and partner, Jeff Woodworth of Denver, Colorado, Joel and wife, Brenda of Curtis, Elgin and wife, Heather of McCook; a daughter, LaRena and husband, Rick Stuckwisch of South Bend, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, 10 a.m. at the Norris Avenue Chapel in McCook, 1211 Norris Avenue. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Visitation is today at Herrmann-Jones Funeral until 7 p.m.
