HERNDON, Kansas -- Esther E. Pennington, 99, died Sunday (Oct. 6, 2013), in Herndon.
She was born April 27, 1914, in rural Herndon to Mathias and Elizabeth (Huss) Hartner. She attended Herndon High School and St. Anthony's Nurses Training in Denver, Colorado.
She lived in Santa Rosa, California, Alexandria, Louisiana, Denver and Arvada, Colorado, Detroit, Michigan and moved to Herndon in 2003. She married Norman G. Pennington Nov.9, 1941, in Carson City, Nevada. She was a registered nurse.
She was a founding member of the Denver Area Association for Retarded Cirizens, St. Joan of Arc Altar Society in Arvada and honorary member of St. Mary's Christian Mothers Altar Society of Herndon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Gregory; brothers, Francis, Harold, C. J. and Clement "Sonny" Hartner; sisters, Isabella Barenberg, Amelia "Irene" Portschy, Alice Farrell and Johanna "Joan" Noble.
Survivors include children, Mark (Connie) Pennington of Arvada, Mary Rushing of Sacramento, California and Ann (Alan) Solko of Herndon; sisters, Rita Eckerdt of Loveland, Colorado; eight grandchildren, two great-grand children and three step-great-grandchildren.
Services are Thursday, Oct. 10 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Herndon with the Rev. Nick Parker officiating. Interment is at St. Mary's Cemetery in Herndon.
Vigil service is Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at the church in Herndon. Visitation is Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the funeral home in Oberlin, from 5 to 8 pm. at the church in Herndon and Thursday, from 8 a.m until service time at the church.
Memorials may be given to Hospice Services, Inc, Phillipsburg and Prairie Development Center in Atwood, Kansas.
