Alden 'Skelly' Vern Remington
McCOOK, Nebraska -- Alden"Skelly" Vern Remington was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Danbury, Nebraska, to George and Anna Catherine (Ward) Remington. He passed away Oct. 3, 2013, in McCook, Nebraska, at the age of 88.
After finishing his senior year of high school, he was drafted into the Navy where he served as a Radioman Third Class on the USS Lansdowne (also called the Lucky L) from 1944 until 1946. While serving his country, he was awarded The American Area Camp Medal; Asiatic Pacific Camp Medal; 3 Stars Point System; and The Victory Medal.
In 1952 he met the love of his life, Catherine Elizabeth McConville on a blind date and it was love at first site. They were married the following year in Indianola and made their home in McCook. They spent many wonderful years together as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in April of this year.
Alden worked as a mechanic for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads for 34 years until his retirement in March of 1988. He also spent his spare time working on vehicles and machinery for friends and relatives. After his retirement, he and Catherine traveled every chance they got. He loved to drink coffee with his family and friends. He never knew a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Marvin, Doran, and Otis, granddaughter Alisha Browder, and son-in-law Doug Colby.
Survivors include his loving wife Catherine; daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Schwartz of Clarkson, Nebraska, Roselyn (Mike) Gall of Cambridge; Nebraska, Carolyn (Rocky) Stone of McCook, Noreen Colby of Cambridge, Nebraska, Rhonda Remington of Bluehill, Nebraska, Sharilyn Remington of Thornton, Colorado and Christine (William) Lawrence of Arvada, Colorado. Sons include Ronald and Roy, both of McCook; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Community Hospital Foundation.
Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, from 4 p.m. until time of rosary.
Rosary will be recited on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013 at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. CT.
