ARAPAHOE, Nebraska -- Genevieve M. "Jen" Umshler, 91, of Chadron, Nebraska, died Monday (Sept. 16, 2013), at her daughter's home in Arapahoe, Nebraska.
She was born on Nov. 8, 1921, in Osceola, Nebraska, to Floyd Melvin and Eva May (DeLand) Hartson. She graduated from Osceola High School in in 1938. She worked in Osceola and then at Olympia, Washington, where she worked in a clerical position with the Washington State Patrol. On Dec. 24, 1943, she married Warren Hardy Umshler in Santa Ana, California.
After her husband's military service, they moved to Walthill, Nebraska and then to Chadron, where her husband accepted a position with Reed Funeral Home and Hardware Store. She worked for the United States Forest Service in a clerical position and then as the Deputy District Court Clerk of Dawes County. She was elected and re-elected for five additional terms as District Court Clerk. She served as the District Court Clerk for more than 20 years. She was a member of NACO (Nebraska Association of County Officials) and of the American Legion Auxiliary (Chadron Department).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Hardy Umshler; her parents; her sister, Laura Gustafson; brother-in-law, Wallace Gustafson; and infant sister, Barbara Ann Hartson.
She is survived by her children, Skip Umshler and wife, Bev, of Mount Vernon, Missouri, Sherry Cacy and husband Mike, of Arapahoe, Cam Stoye and husband, Fred, of Arapahoe, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska, with Scott Jones officiating.
Viewing and visitation is Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe,.
