Rotary matches grant funds for scholarships

McCOOK, Nebraska -- McCook Rotary Club recently granted four $1,000 scholarships to McCook High School students. The scholarships were made possible through a grant from the Vada Kinman and Col. Barney Oldfield Foundation, and matched by the McCook Rotary and two individuals.
Veronica Bair is the daughter of Bruce and Suzy Bair and plans on attending University of Nebraska Lincoln to study civil engineering. She told the Rotary Club that she hopes to come back to rural Nebraska after graduating from college. She is an avid runner and was involved in the Interact Purple Pinky project to immunize students against polio.
Allison Been is the daughter of Peggy and Kent Been and plans on attending University of Nebraska Omaha to study biotechnology. She was the vice-president of the McCook Interact Club, a Rotary Youth Leadership Academy participant, and an organizer for bringing a speaker from the Jason Dahl Foundation to McCook High School.
Sara Larington is the daughter of Michelle Larington and Dan Larington and plans on attending University of Nebraska at Kearney to study speech pathology. She was the Interact President, worked on the Purple Pinky project, helped prepare baskets for Family Resource Center, helped with Feeding the Flock Community Supper and Feed My Starving Children.
Gavin Harsh is the son of Pam Harsh and Doug Harsh and plans on attending University of Nebraska Lincoln to study nutrition health science and physical therapy. He was active in student council and FBLA, was class officer and a 3-sport athlete, and a member of Youth Change Reaction. He is also a member of the 2011-12 Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute class and is spearheading the effort to bring a drive-in movie event to the Red Willow County Fairgrounds on Aug. 10.
