OGALLALA, Nebraska -- Sam Jimenez, 89, longtime Ogallala resident, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Indian Hills Healthcare Community.

Sam was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Sedgwick, Colorado, the son of Ascension and Katherine (Sweet) Jimenez. He grew up in Colorado and the family moved to Big Springs, Nebraska, when Sam was five years old. The family farmed near Brule from 1937 to 1955. Sam joined the Army in 1945 and served in the Occupation of Japan. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to help on the family farm. In 1955, he began working in the mining tunnels in Colorado.

Sam was a self-employed carpenter most of his life.

In 1955, Sam married Hope Alvarado at Ogallala. To this union Laura, Leonard, and Richard were born.

In 1975, Sam married Earla (Stout) Annable at Cheyenne, Wyoming. The couple resided in several communities including McCook, Grand Island, and Loveland, Colo., and then settled in Ogallala.

His hobbies included fishing and gardening. He was a member of the VFW.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters: Rosie Reyna, Mary Hernandez, and Victoria Galaviz; and four brothers, Augustine, Joe, Pete, and John.

Survivors include his wife Earla Jimenez of Ogallala and his children: Terry Annable, John (Dianne) Annable, and Kathy (James) Sizer, all of Ogallala; Craig (Velida) Annable of Tucson, Arizona, Peggy (Richard) Huffman of Grand Island, Nebraska, Laura Codding and Lenny Torres, both of Denver, Colorado and Rick (Darlene) Torres of Commerce City, Colorado Also a brother, Frank (Delia) Jimenez of Big Springs and a sister, Annie Alvarado of Loveland, Colorado; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family chose cremation. The memorial service will be Monday, July 8, at 10 a.m., Mountain Time, in Draucker Funeral Home. Rev. Ginny Adams of the First Congregational, United Church of Christ will officiate.

The inurnment will take place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell on Monday, at 2 p.m, Central Time with military honors.
