Joan Rita Scovill

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Joan Rita Scovill, age 80, formally of Otis, Colorado, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at McCook Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. Joan had just recently moved to McCook to be closer to her family.

Joan was born in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, on April 24, 1933, to parents James and Isabel (Hoye) Brisbois. She was one of nine children. The family later moved to Colorado, where Joan graduated from Arvada High School in 1951.

Joan married Andrew Szewczyk in Arvada, Colorado, in 1952. The couple was blessed with six children. The family spent many years traveling and living on different military bases while Andrew served in the United States Air Force.

Joan later married John Scovill on Sept. 11, 1976, in Westminster, Colorado. She became the loving stepmother to John's nine children. The couple made their home in Otis where Joan was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Throughout her life Joan enjoyed designing floral arrangements, working puzzles, bird watching, as well as painting and drawing. She also spent time singing for the Denver Metropolitan Opera. Joan loved to garden and go camping and fishing with her family. The family shares many fond memories of singing around the camp fire.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; stepson, T.C. Scovill; two sisters, Isabelle Rosser and Dorothy Miskol; three brothers, William, Leonard and James Brisbois; and two great-grandchildren, Derek Scovill and Eric Scovill.

She is survived by her three sons, Andrew (Beth) Szewczyk of New York, Thomas (Sue) Szewczyk of Wisconsin and John Szewczyk of Colorado; three daughters, Mary (Rob) Henry of Nebraska, Kathleen (Dale) Turnley of Oregon and Rever (Richard) Brisbois of Colorado; step-children, John Scovill of New Mexico, Mike Scovill of Colorado, Teri Matson of Colorado, Colleen Wright of South Carolina, Ruth Scovill of Mississippi, Jeff Scovill of Colorado, Gretchen Scovill of Mississippi and Lori Willis of Colorado. Also surviving are her three sisters, Claire Patterson of Missouri, Lillian Demers of Colorado and Barbara Diel of Colorado, as well as 42 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and extended family.

Visitation is Saturday, July 13, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (MT) at the First Baptist Church of Otis in Otis, Colorado.

Funeral services will be following the visitation, beginning at 3 p.m. (MT), also at the First Baptist Church of Otis with Pastor Paul Livingston, officiating.
