McCOOK, Nebraska -- Robert "Bob" Otto Hesterwerth, age 84, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home.
He was born near McCook in Red Willow County on Oct. 13, 1928, to Otto and Sarah (Geihsler) Hesterwerth. Bob grew up on the family farm southeast of McCook. He graduated from McCook High School in 1946.
Bob joined the U.S. Army, serving as a member of the 456th Field Artillery Unit during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany. Upon returning from service, Bob began farming and ranching until he retired in 2002.
Bob was united in marriage to Joan Elaine Miller on Aug. 16, 1958, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook. They enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage. To this union two sons were born: Kevin and Mark.
Bob was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the McCook Elks Lodge 1434. Bob and Joan enjoyed attending his 465h Field Artillery reunions every year and traveling all over the U.S. Bob's favorite pastime was playing cards and pool with family and friends. He also enjoyed carpentry work, building their home in McCook.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Archie and Chester; sisters, Annie Hesterwerth and Marge Fynes; in-laws, John and Martha Miller; sister-in-law, Eileen Randel and brother-in-law, Donald Miller.
He is survived by his wife; Joan and two sons, Kevin and Mark, all of McCook; sister, Arvilla Archer of Burbank, California; sisters-in-laws, Lois and husband, Ray Bartusiak of Littleton, Colorado; Gwen Miller of Culbertson; brothers-in-laws, Roland and wife, Jeanette Miller of Culbertson, Nebraska and Cliff and wife Diane Randel of Indianola, Nebraska, along with many nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be recited on Tuesday evening, June 25, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 11 a.m., with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery of McCook.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. and on Tuesday, 9 a.m. until after the rosary.
