ELWOOD, Nebraska -- Corrine Ruth Ficken, 83, died Monday (June 10, 2013), at Elwood Care Center, in Elwood.

She was born Dec.21, 1929, at Cheyenne County, Kansas, to Fred and Virginia (Trembly) Sass.

She attended school at St. Francis High School at St. Francis, Kansas and graduated in 1947. She continued her education at McCook Junior College, McCook, Nebraska, and Kearney State College, in Kearney, Nebraska, while graduating with at degree in physics and math. She taught math at Arapahoe, Nebraska, for three years.

She married Harvey Ficken at Haigler, Nebraska on Nov. 12, 1967. They made their home south of Eustis, Nebraska, where they farmed and ranched. She went to the Elwood Care Center in 2008 because of health reasons. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Peter William Sass; sister, Lillian Anderson; brother-in-law, Everett Carlson and sister-in-law, Phyllis Sass.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Ficken of Eustis; sister, Marjorie Carlson of Lakewood, Colorado; brother-in-law, Norvin Anderson of St. Francis, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are Wednesday, June 12, 2013, 10 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with the Rev. David Dobbertien officiating. Interment will be at Salem West Cemetery in Elwood.

Viewing and visitation is today, June 11, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Elwood Funeral Home in Elwood and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
