Thomas Shirley

April 25, 1928 - May 5, 2013

SPRINGVIEW, Nebraska -- Thomas Edward Shirley, 85, of Springview, Nebraska, formerly of McCook, passed away on May 5, 2013.

Tom was born on April 25, 1928 in Stockville, Nebraska, to Thomas Clarence and Isabell Irene (Wagner) Shirley. He attended high school in Maywood, Nebraska. On June 17, 1947, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean Smith in North Platte, Nebraska.

Tom worked for the Hawthorn and Jess Hadley ranches before farming near Cambridge, Nebraska and working in the oil fields in numerous states. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and his love for thoroughbred racing horses, which he owned and trained.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Phyllis; brother, Jim Shirley; sister, Marge Boner and son, William Shirley.

Survivors include two sons, Jack (Marlene) Shirley of Maxwell, Nebraska and Kenneth (Sandy) Shirley of Omaha, Nebraska; four daughters: Janie (Paul) Bykonen of Montana, Margie (Randy) Sokol of Sparks, Nebraska, Doreen (Tom) Norton of North Platte and Joann (Caroll) Hiatt of North Platte; two brothers: Bill Shirley of Grand Island and Robert Shirley of North Platte; sister Maryann Norgaard of Maywood; and numerous grandchildren.

There will be a small family gathering at the residence of Jack Shirley, south of Maxwell, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013.
