Robert 'Bob' Lee Shaffer

ARAPAHOE, Nebraska -- Robert "Bob" Lee Shaffer, 78, of Edison, Nebraska, died Monday (April 29, 2013), at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.

He was born Jan. 17, 1935, in Beardstown, Illinois, to Vernie Melvin and Velma Pearl (Millard) Shaffer. The family lived on a farm north of Arapahoe where he attended country school. The family moved north of Edison and he finished his education at Edison Public School.

He married Marilyn Chapman on Feb. 11, 1955. He worked construction jobs which included Industrial Pipelines out of Holdrege, Nebraska, working in several states. In 1962, he opened his own mechanic shop in Edison. In 1972 in Sydney, Nebraska, he helped construct the three-wheel car called "Fascination." He operated a leather repair shop fixing saddles, boots and trampoline covers. He closed his mechanic shop and obtained his water and waste water certification and worked for the Village of Edison until his retirement.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother and sister in infancy; a brother, Calvin; son-in-law, Alan Amen; mother-and father-in-law, Abe and Laverne Chapman and brother in-law, Gary Chapman.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Shaffer of Edison; daughters, Bonnie and husband Ike Brown of McCook, Nebraska, Betty Amen of Holdrege, Nebraska and Cindy and husband, Rick Dean of Franklin, Nebraska; son, Rob and wife, Susan Shaffer of McCook; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Edison Christian Church in Edison with Rev. Kirk Einspahr officiating. Inurnment will be at the Edison Cemetery.

There will be no visitation as cremation was chosen.
