HOUSTON, Texas -- Val was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Duane and Hazel (Smith) Kotrous while his father served in the Civilian Core at Pearl Harbor Navel Yards. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Omaha South High in 1964. He is survived by his wife, Monte (Wills), who is of Curtis, Nebraska.
Val earned a degree in Geology from the University of Nebraska in 1978. After graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Monte (Wills), May 22, 1978.
Val was an avid collector of many things, but U.S. Coins, fine fossils, and minerals were his favorites. He also loved spending time with family and friends and sharing his vast knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He enjoyed telling stories and found great joy in "pulling someone's leg."
Val was a very passionate man. His passions included Cornhusker football, chasing a rare coin or obscure mineral, communing with nature in the Grand Canyon and finding the perfect piece of jewelry for Monte.
Val's celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Curtis Berean Church, 512 Prentiss Ave, Curtis, Nebraska.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
