CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska -- Richard Dale "Butch" Johnson, age 69, of Cambridge, died at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 11, 2013.
He was born on Jan. 26, 1944, in Cambridge to Roy and Opal (Bathrick) Johnson. Butch attended and graduated from Cambridge High school in 1962. He went to McCook Community College for two years and later a semester at Kearney State Teachers College.
Butch enjoyed all sports, umpiring baseball, coaching soccer and softball. In high school, he was a very talented athlete, receiving the Butch Luther Award in 1962 from Cambridge High School for the best male athlete. He farmed with his family and most recent years, with his brothers in the Cambridge area.
On Nov. 9, 1985, he was united in marriage to Zeneth "Penny" Ellison. The couple made their home in Cambridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Kathy.
Butch is survived by his wife, Penny; two brothers, Ron and Howard and his wife, Betty, all of Cambridge; four sisters, Janet and husband, Clyde Johnson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Carole Moore of Dedham, Massachusetts, Virginia and husband, Dave Lenzen of Smithfield, Nebraska and Diane and husband, Mike Nevins of Jackson, Michigan; seven nieces and nephews, Shawn Johnson, Shelley Johnson, Kendall Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Kelley Kraaimoore, Kerrey O'Leary and Michelle Stretch.
Visitation for Butch will be on Thursday, April 18, 2013, and Friday, April 19, 2013, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Funeral services will be at the Trinity United Methodist church in Cambridge with Pastor Sherry Skelnar officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
