Record-setting day at Hoehner Invite track meet

Sunday, March 31, 2013
Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Molly Sughroue of McCook crosses the finish line first in the girls 800-meter run at the Hoehner Invite track meet at McCook Thursday, March 28. Sughroue won three events and set two new meet records to share the E.B. Bruth Memorial Award for the top female athlete in the meet.

Hang around the McCook High School track and field teams long enough, and you'll certainly the letters PR from the coaches and athletes.

Personal records -- running faster, jumping higher and longer, throwing farther than the meet before is a goal of every Bison athlete and their coaches.

Both McCook teams set several PR's Thursday, March 28, during the Leroy Hoehner Invitational meet at the McCook High School stadium. Both Bison teams turned in solid team efforts in the seven-team field.

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Kaden Huxoll of Cambridge cruises toward the finish line in the boys 200-meter dash at the Hoehner Invite March 28 at McCook. Huxoll swept the gold medals in the sprints to claim the J.R. Mollring Memorial Award for the top male athlete at the annual meet.

The McCook boys ran away with the team title, scoring 173 points to 118 for runner-up Lexington. Cambridge finished third with 83 points.

The Bison girls came close to Holdrege, but the Dusters won first place with 151 points to 142 for McCook. Lex finished third with 104 points.

The highlight of the meet for the McCook boys came in the horizontal jumps with a pair of sophomores grabbing the spotlight.

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Trevor Pate of McCook runs to the finish line in the boys 800-meter run at the Hoehner Invitational track meet Thursday, March 28 at McCook. Pate ran second behind teammate Austin Cherry.

Bryce Lyons blew away his personal best in the long jump when he recorded a first-place effort of 21 feet, 5 inches. Bison head coach Tom Sughroue said Lyons had two jumps Thursday over 21 feet. Sughroue noted that Lyons struggled with injuries last year as a freshman and never hit 20 feet in the event. He went 20-7 in the North Platte dual a week ago.

Darius Williams stretched his personal record in the triple jump to 41 feet, 3 inches for second place Thursday. Coach Sughroue said Williams was a 34-feet triple jumper last spring.

"A lot of our younger kids are stepping up," Sughroue said. "Not to mention all of our older kids who we kind of expect those kind of performances from. I think our younger kids see our older kids perform that way and they know the expectation and step up and want to be in those same role. Success breeds success, and that's exactly what we have going now. That's nice to see."

McCOOK WAS STRONG in the boys throwing events with a list of career-best marks.

Mitch Collicott won the shot put with a PR toss of 52 feet, 6 inches. Matt Collicott hit a best-ever mark of 143-3 in the discus. Teammate Lucas Post decided to post his career-best throw of 144-3 to take the gold medal away from Matt and lead the Bison to a 1-2 finish.

One meet record was broken in the boys division, and that record holder wore the McCook colors. Austin Cherry cruised to the 800-meter run gold with a fast early-season time of 1 minute, 59.7 seconds. Cherry snapped his meet record of 2:00.3 set a year ago. Cherry also ran a leg on two McCook first-place relay teams.

Cherry, Dakota McBride, Zayne Gillen and Cody Wudtke ran first in the 400 relay with a time of 44.5 seconds. Cherry, McBride, Jacob Riemann and freshman Joe Schlager won the 1,600 relay in 3:33.3, beating Lexington by nearly eight seconds.

Wudtke also won the high jump, clearing 6 feet even.

BISON JUNIOR Molly Sughroue headed the McCook girls' efforts. Sughroue won three events and set two meet records. Molly won the 400-meter dash, breezing home in 58.6 seconds to eclipse the meet record she set last year (59.3). Sughroue also won the 800-meter run in 2:19.6, breaking the meet record of 2:22.6 set by Shelly Block of Gothenburg in 1982.

Sughroue also won the 200-meter dash with a fast time of 26.2 seconds, and she excited the crowd with a stirring anchor led in the 1,600 relay. Molly made up nearly 20 yards on the final leg of the relay, but she couldn't catch Holdrege's runner at the wire. McCook was timed in 4:11.0, while Holdrege was first at 4:10.4.

Sughroue's effort was one of many strong marks for the Bison girls.

"I think we were very happy with the performance of the team," head coach Steve Clapp said. "We had a lot of points scored in a lot of different areas. We actually came pretty close to Holdrege and had Lexington behind us, so we were pretty happy with the team results."

Rachel Goltl broke the 50-second barrier in the girls 300 hurdles with her third-place time of 49.7. Abi Mohr also set a new meet record in the pole vault when she hit 10 feet, 1 inch for first place. The old mark of 10-0 was set by Kaci Nickerson of Cambridge in 2004.

McCook's Maddie Elder also won the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 5 inches. The Bison 400 relay quartet of Asti Randa, Madison Chitwood, Madison Shepherd and Mohr also finished first.

Coach Clapp said his team's depth was a big key to the Bison girls finishing second in the team standings.

COACH CLAPP also congratulated Gabbi Gracia of Holdrege for a great meet. Gracia set new meet records in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200, breaking the 3,200 record that was set by Carol Nunnally of McCook in 1981. Gracia and Sughroue shared the E.B. Bruth Memorial Award for the most outstanding female athlete at Thursday's meet.

Kaden Huxoll of Cambridge was named the J.R. Mollring Memorial Award winner for the most outstanding male athlete. Huxoll swept gold medals in the boys sprints, winning the 100-meter dash, the 200 meters and the 400.

COACH SUGHROUE also thanked all the volunteers from community who helped run the meet and work at all McCook home track events. Sughroue said the Bison track coaches, the team and the school really appreciate their efforts.

McCook returns to action Friday, April 5, at the Broken Bow Invitational.
