Zelda Lucile Hinton Maret
Nov. 1, 1917 - March 27, 2013
CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska -- Zelda Lucile Hinton Maret was born on Nov. 1, 1917, in rural Frontier County, near Stockville, Nebraska, to Albert and Mary Bernice (Blake) Hinton. Her early childhood was spent in the Stockville area, attending grade school at the Rising Sun School. She attended high school through the 11th grade in Stockville, riding her horse "Poodle" to and from school. As Zelda always wanted to be a beautician, she liked to cut and finger-wave hair, a talent she used on many cousins and family members, as there were many of the Hinton family who lived close by.
On Oct. 13, 1934, she married Merle Maret in Oberlin, Kansas. They lived in the Stockville and Curtis area, later moving to the Elsie area to work on a ranch. They then moved back to the Stockville area to farm and ranch, living there for many years. After leaving the farm in 1976, they retired to Indianola. In 1985, Zelda moved to Bartley to care for her mother.
Zelda was baptized into Christ in January 1953, at Indianola, and attended the Church of Christ for many years until her failing health prevented her from attending weekly services.
In November 2007, Zelda moved into the Plaza in Cambridge with her two brothers, Ralph and Alfred Hinton, living there until March 2010 when she chose to move permanently into the Cambridge Manor because of continued failing health issues.
Zelda enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, and trying new recipes. For several years she took many canned entries to the Frontier County Fair, where she won many first places. She was a great cook, specializing in homemade chicken and noodles, cinnamon rolls, and pies. During the late 1960s, Zelda worked as a waitress for the Bartley café and then during the early 1970s, Zelda worked for the Red Willow County Social Services, assisting the elderly with various home health care needs.
Zelda was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merle, brother Dean Hinton, and great-great grandson Camron Maret.
She is survived by her three children: LaVerne and his wife, Gene of Holdrege, Nebraska, Marlene Mustion of Indianola, Nebraska and Margene Hayes and her husband, Randy of Imperial, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren: Stacy, Tracy, Kristy, Nikki, and Rodney and his wife, Francis Maret; Scott and Terry Mustion and Kerry and her husband, Mike Sides; Bryan, Danelle, and Brent Hayes and Janelle Corman and her husband, Dustin; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph and Alfred Hinton of Cambridge; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Swanson and husband, Ray of North Platte, and Beulah Hall and husband, Lawrence of Cozad.
