GRAND ISLAND , Nebraska -- Darlene E. Sorensen, 59, of Grand Island, died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Sorensen's wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the First Plymouth Congregational Church, 20th & D in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Rev. Barb Smisek will officiate. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Darlene was born July 3, 1953, at McCook, Nebraska. She is the daughter of Roy L. and Arline (Porter) Stewart.
Survivors of the immediate family include her beloved husband, Ronn Sorensen of Grand Island; one son, Joshua Sorensen of Lincoln; one sister-in-law, Bev Anderson and friend Cris Sells of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Peggy Stewart of Lincoln.
Others left to cherish her memory include her grandchildren, Savannah, Jesse James and Chevelle; many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Darlene grew up in Culbertson and while in high school taught baton twirling. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1971. She moved to Lincoln after graduation. She was employed at Senate Inn where she met the love of her life, Ronn Sorensen. They were married on Nov. 22, 1975, at Lincoln. Ronn managed various hotels in the Midwest, so they lived in several communities before returning to Lincoln in 1986.
Darlene was a floral design artist at Burton Tyrell's Florist and most recently, floral department manager for Russ's Market until her health forced her to retire in 2011. She and Ronn moved to Grand Island in August of 2012.
Darlene loved time spent with her family and friends, enjoyed working in her yard and flower gardens and had a lifelong love of her pets.
She attended the First Plymouth Congregational Church.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, RoxieAnn Fries and Connie Tweton.
The family will establish a memorial fund in Darlene's name at a later date.
