Virgil 'Pete' Portschy

HERNDON, Kansas -- Virgil 'Pete" Portschy, 79, died Jan. 18, 2013, at Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood, Kansas.

He was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Herndon to John and Francis (Mosher) Portschy. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1951. He married Eileen Kleidosty on Feb. 1, 1954.

He was employed by Rawlins County Road and Bridge for 45 years, before retiring in 1999. After retiring, he drove the school bus as a substitute driver at Herndon.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Herndon and served on the parish council several times. He also served several terms on the Herndon School Board.

He moved to Good Samaritan Society in Atwood in 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Francis Portschy; infant sister, Janice Lee; brothers, Charles and wife, Virginia, Harold and wife, Irene; sister, Hazel and husband, Billy T. Henderson.

Survivors are his wife, Eileen; children, Rita and Greg Marintzer, Cheri Kastens, Dean and Deb Portschy, all of Herndon; sister, Martha Korbe and husband, Nick, of Hays, Kansas; brother-in-law, Eugene Kleidosty of Herndon; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial is Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Herndon. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Rosary is Thursday, Jan. 24, 20113, 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Herndon.

There is no visitation. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Society of Atwood or St. Mary's Assumption Church in Herndon.

Williams Funeral Home in Atwood is in charge of arrangements.
