INDIANOLA, Nebraska -- Leah Clair Sughroue of Indianola passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on Christmas Day. She was 77 years old.
Leah was born on May 3, 1935, in Hay Springs, Nebraska, to parents, Elvin Clare and Marion Elvera (Dotson) Allen. She graduated from Indianola High School with the class of 1953.
On July 1, 1953, she was united in marriage to James Franklin Sughroue at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Indianola. Jim preceded her in death on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2012. After Jim's discharge from the military in 1955, they made their home in Indianola and later near Enders, where Jim was superintendent of Enders Dam and Leah was a busy homemaker and mother of eight children. In 1979, the family relocated to Indianola.
Leah was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and Altar Society. She loved working in her yard, especially her flower garden, reading books, crocheting, needlework and sewing. Family and friends were a very important part of her life, most importantly the time spent having coffee and a good visit around the kitchen table. She was an avid sports enthusiast, especially when it was time for the Olympics. She greatly enjoyed her grandchildren's ball games and activities.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 59 years, James F. Sughroue; parents, Elvin and Marion Allen; daughter, Janine Sughroue; sons, Jeffery and James "Jimmy" Sughroue; son-in-law, Paul Bartels; and sister, Damaris Hedges.
Survivors include her daughters, Jeanette and husband, Larry Munger, of Imperial, Julie and husband, Mike Anderson, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Jill Bartels and fiancé, Jim Jumps, of McCook; sons, Jay Sughroue of Lakewood, Colorado and Joel Sughroue of Indianola; daughters-in-law, Marcia Sughroue and Ramona Sughroue, both of Indianola; sisters, Margaret and husband, Walter Holland, of Laramie, Wyoming and Jan and husband, Doug Horn, of Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; aunt, Audrey and husband, Salvy Catania, of Plattsmouth; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given in her name and will be presented to organizations in the Indianola and McCook communities.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook from 1-4 p.m. Friends may go online at www.carpenterbreland to extend condolences to the family.
Rosary will be recited Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, 7 p.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Indianola. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, 10 a.m. at St. Catherine's with Father Thomas McGuire as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery.
