ARAPAHOE, Nebraska -- LaVerne W. Hermes, 87, of Arapahoe, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2012), at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe.

He was born Nov. 25, 1925, at Arapahoe to Herman and Louisa (Helms) Hermes.

He attended Garfield Country School, Trinity Parochial School and graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1943. After his military service, he returned home and began farming. In 1947, he bought a farm three miles south of Arapahoe. In 1948, he married Marna Ziebell at the Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Arapahoe, Nebraska.

To supplement his income, he began working as a carpenter and found his second career in life, which he continued until his retirement. He entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home following a stroke in November 2008.

LaVerne was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Arapahoe and Edison American Legion Post No. 343.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Kathleen Burns; sister, Evelyn Hilker; infant brother, Victor, and brother-in-law, Clifford Hilker.

He is survived by his wife, Marna Hermes of Arapahoe; son, Dick and wife, Janet Hermes of Arapahoe; daughter, Cynthia and husband, Gary Pfeiffer of Worland, Wyoming; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services aare Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Arapahoe with the Rev. James Moshier officiating. Burial will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery with military rites given by the Edison American Legion Post No. 343 of Edison, Nebraska.

Vsitation is Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and prior to the service at the church.
