KEARNEY, Nebraska -- Joy Lynn Solko, 54, of Kearney, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Saint Francis Medical Center with family at her side.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m Friday evening with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with Father Joe Hannappel officiating. To honor Joy's wishes, cremation has taken place. All Faiths Funeral Home of Grand Island is serving the family.

Joy, daughter of Ralph and Joy (DeOss) Burton, was born Feb. 25,1958, in McCook, Nebraska.

Those left to cherish her memory include her three children, Kris Solko and her daughter, Kasandra of Kearney, Kendra Solko of Omaha and Charles Solko of Herndon, Kansas; the father of her children, Patrick Solko of Herndon, Kansas; brothers, Mike Burton of Denver, Colorado, Max Burton of Beaver City and Bill Burton and wife, Sunni of Lexington; sister, Jacque Shepherd of Minden; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joy grew up in Bartley, Nebraska, graduating from Bartley High School in 1976. She was united in marriage to Patrick James Solko on Nov. 28, 1986, and they were blessed with three wonderful children.

Joy was employed by Herndon and Rawlins County Public Schools, Prairie Developmental Center in Atwood, Kansas; Bethany Home in Minden and for the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She fought a courageous battle against metastatic breast cancer. Joy was not only her name but her disposition.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Herndon, Kansas and St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. She was involved in PRIDE, Christian Mothers, Kearney Area Humane Society and was a proud member of her bowling team. Above all, Joy loved her family and was always very involved in her children's lives, attending their extra-curricular activities. We love you, Joy, and your spirit will always be with us.

A memorial fund will be established in Joy's name at a later date.
