ELWOOD, Nebraska --Harry Richard Martin, 83, of Red Cloud, Nebraska, formerly of Elwood, died Monday (Dec. 10, 2012), at the VA Regional Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1929, at Oconto, Nebraska to Raymond and Nellie (Newhouse) Martin. He attended Callaway High School and graduated with the class of 1947. He attended Milford Tech School for a few years. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the war. On Aug.27, 1962, he married Melba R. Hare at Gary, Indiana. They resided in Crete, Illinois, where he worked for Youngstown Steel Mill until retirement in 1975.
The family moved back to Nebraska and settled near Elwood. He worked for several years at Kingsley Ready Mix in Holdrege, Nebraska and Wal-Mart in Lexington, Nebraska. He was a member of the Elwood American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Melba; brother, Wallace Martin and sister, Callie McClendon.
Survivors include includes sons, Joe and special friend, Mary Rooksted of Oxford, Nebraska, Richard Martin of Red Cloud, Nebraska; daughters, Pamela Stehl of Wilcox, Nebraska, Tammy and husband, Jeff Hillebrand of Edison, Nebraska; brother, Fred and wife Patsy, Martin of Elwood; sister, Elaine and husband, Bob Keiser of Gothenburg, Nebraska; sixgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at 2 p..m. at the Elwood Funeral Home, in Elwood with the Rev. David Welch officiating. Inurnment will follow at Elwood Cemetery, in Elwood with military rites by U.S. Army Honor Guard.
