McCOOK, Nebraska -- Velma Darlene Happold, 91, died at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012.
She was born Oct. 13, 1920, at home on the family farm in the White Community in Hayes County to William Phillip and Christina (Schaffert) Orman. She was the third of six children.
Velma was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hayes County. She attended school in a one-room school house through the eighth grade riding a pony with her young siblings or walking the three miles. The family moved to McCook where she graduated from McCook High School in 1939.
She married PFC Donald Dale Happold of Aurora, Nebraska, on Aug. 24, 1944, in Lincoln at Grace Lutheran Church.
Don was in the Army, stationed at Camp Crowder, Missouri. From there, he left for overseas duty and Velma returned home to her family until he returned three years later.
Velma always had a job from the age of fifteen working after school cleaning houses. She was employed in the office of Ideal Laundry until it closed and then the Jewell Wholesale Company for many years until her husband became ill and she retired to take care of him. He died on Dec. 31, 2000.
Velma was a Sunday School teacher at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook of which she was a member. She also belonged to the Ladies Guild, Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the quilters.
She enjoyed playing pinochle, reading, especially her Bible and doing fancy embroidery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Happold; parents, William and Christina Orman; sisters, Lillian Roedel in 1993 and Emma at birth; and brother, Wilfred Orman in 1988.
Velma is survived by sisters, Dorleen Ward and LaVonne Clapp, both of McCook; numerous nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Albertson officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
