Walter H. Zapp

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Walter Zapp passed away Sunday (May 27, 2012), at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska, at the age of 86.

He was born Aug. 11, 1925, at Culbertson, Nebraska, the son of the late Gustav and Hermine (Schehr) Zapp. Walt grew up at Culbertson, where he graduated from District 6 rural school north of Culbertson. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1942. He began his farming career on the family farm.

On Jan. 19, 1947, Walt married Enid Boyer at Oberlin, Kansas. They have spent most of their married life farming in the Culbertson community, until retiring and moving to McCook in 1988.

During their life they enjoyed square dancing, traveling, Husker Football, playing cards, bowling, farming and visiting with everyone.

He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Culbertson and was currently a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Otto Zapp and Bob Zapp and one sister, Betty Stein.

Walt is survived by his wife, Enid Zapp of McCook; sons, Tom Zapp and wife, Mary of Higginsville, Missouri, Jerry Zapp and wife B'Anne of Kearney, Nebraska, Mike Zapp and wife, Judy of Kearney, Nebraska, Ted Zapp and wife, Velora of Culbertson and daughters, Pat Wagner and husband, Ty of Culbertson and Jane Gilliam and husband, Lee of Oberlin, Kansas; 13 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Lance Clay officiating. The family will greet friends at the Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given in his name and left at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery at Culbertson, Nebraska.
