EVERGREEN, Colorado -- Shirley Mardelle Luretta Whitten Mauer, 80, passed away peacefully with family at her side May 14, 2012, at her home in Evergreen.
Wife to Elwin E. Mauer for 59 years, she was born August 24, 1931, in Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, the oldest of four daughters to William Wallace and Alta Whitten. She graduated from McCook High School and attended St Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Denver.
On Sept. 14, 1952, she married Elwin in McCook and after moving between Nebraska and Colorado several times,they finally settled in Evergreen in 1967.
Shirley was employed as an OB/GYN nurse at St Luke's Hospital and later as a staff nurse at Lakepoint Medical Center. She served on the Evergreen ambulance team for four years. In 1989, she became vice president, secretary/treasurer to the family business, Aztec Radiant Heating. Shirley was a member of Eastern Star, a board member of St Luke's Alumnae Association and a board member of Friends of Nursing Scholarship Association. She was a breast cancer survivor and served as a volunteer to the Alzheimer Association and Channel 6. She loved the theater, sailing, traveling and catching up on family genealogy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Katherine Joan; grand-nephew, Micheal and niece, Rebecca.
She is survived by husband Elwin; sisters, Charlene and Janice of Phoenix; daughters, Debra (Arthur) Robbins of Evergreen, Pamela Renee (James) Barlow of Montana; son, Bruce (Jayne) Mauer of Evergreen; five grandchildren, Erik, Leigh, Katie, Alysa and Michelle and one great-grandchild, Elena.
The memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Newcomer Mortuary, 901 S Sheridan Blvd, Lakewood Colorado.
