HAYS, Kansas -- Alan Dale Addleman passed away Jan. 1, 2012, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, at the age of 79. He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Oberlin, Kansas, the eldest child of Theodore "Ted" and Neva (Russell) Addleman.

Alan attended Oberlin Elementary School and graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1950. He furthered his education at the College of Emporia for two years then served in the United States Army. Alan later enjoyed working with youth as an adult leader for Boy Scouts of America for several years.

Most recently, Alan lived in Estes Park, Colorado, where he was employed at the YMCA Camp and MacGregor Ranch. In addition, Alan worked as an ambulance driver, a school bus driver and a dispatcher. He was well-known as "Big Al" and for his storytelling by friends and acquaintances in Estes Park. He was an active member of the Estes Park American Legion and enjoyed playing golf.

Alan returned home to Oberlin seven years ago to be closer to his family. He resided at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Rusty and Sharon Addleman, of Oberlin; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Robert Ingold, of Olathe; seven nephews and nieces; 13 great-nephews and -nieces; and other family and friends. His parents preceded him in death.

A memorial graveside service is planned for Saturday, May 26, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Oberlin Cemetery with Rev. Judi Stricker officiating. Memorial contributions may be given in his name to the Decatur County Good Samaritan Society.
