McCOOK, Nebraska -- John J. (Jack) Shannon, age 99, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.
Jack was born to Edward and Margaret (Ryan) Shannon on Nov. 8, 1912, at Hartford, Connecticut. He moved with his family to Omaha when he was six, where he attended Creighton Prep School.
Jack met and married Stacia (Anastasia) Horky on May 25, 1938, in Omaha. They moved to Aurora, Colorado, and lived there for 62 years.
During the depression he found work through the government Civil Conservation Corps, C.C.C., in California cutting trees for a sum of $30 dollars a month, sending $25 dollars home to his family. He would box on Saturday nights while in the C.C.C. to earn extra money, which in those days was called a smoker. Jack became an electrician for Burlington Northern Railroad at Denver. He was the general chairman for the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).
Jack enjoyed golf, fishing. playing cards (most of all poker), and bowling of which he became a member of the Denver's Bowlers Hall of fame. He was a kind and gentle man, always helping others when ever he could and always looking out for his fellow workers on the railroad. He had the best sense of humor and told great stories, which everyone would love to hear. He'll be missed by all who knew him!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Margaret; sister, Vera O'Shaughnessy; brothers, Frank, Ray, Denny and Fritz Shannon; son-in-law, Emery Crist.
He is survived by his wife of almost 74 years, Stacia of McCook; children, Kathleen Crist, John Shannon, Jr. and wife, Hannah, all of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Timothy Shannon and wife, Barbara of McCook; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Rosary will be Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1-- 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
