ALMENA, Kansas -- Connie Marie Horn, 58, died Wednesday (April 18, 2012), at her home in Almena, Kansas.

She was born July 23, 1953, in Atwood, Kansas, to William Robert and Mary Agnes (Schmoker) Steele. She grew up on the family farm in the Atwood community, attended the Blakeman school through the eighth grade and graduated from Atwood High School. She received an associate degree in accounting from McCook Community College and also attended college in Kearney.

She married Dennis Shepherd in 1972, and to this union two children, Julie and Si, were born.

She returned to Atwood and in 1976, married Rob Johnson. To this union two children, Hilary and Robbie, were born. They moved to McDonald, Kansas, and later Bird City, Kansas. In 1984, she moved to McCook and in 1993 she. moved to Almena. She married Roger Horn in 1995. She was a corrections officer at the Norton Correctional Facility and had recently retired. Roger passed away Feb. 1, 2010.

Connie attended the Almena Congregational Church.

She was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Roger, and two sisters, Judy Steele and Patty Smethers.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Steele, Atwood; four children, Julie, and husband, Dan Burns, of McCook, Nebraska, Si Shepherd and girlfriend, Cassie Pulley, of Holdrege, Nebraska, Hilary, and husband, Matt VanPatten, of Almena, Robbie Johnson, and girlfriend, Heather Davis, Blue Springs, Missouri; two stepsons, Jeremy, and wife, Cathryn Horn, Wichita, Kansas; Zachery Horn, Denver, Colorado; two brothers, Bob Steele, of Atwood; Terry and wife, Debbie Steele, Pottsboro, Texas; four sisters, Vicki and husband, Chuck Rader, of Harlan, Kansas, Peggy Goss and husband, Kenny Hiatt, Parker, Colorado; Kathy and husband, Roger Steinke, of Olpe, Kansas; Suzanne Steele, of Atwood; 19 grandchildren and one great-grandson; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral service is Monday, April 23, 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Almena. Inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Almena.
