Dizzy Dollers share Gerber Babies

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Thirteen members of the Dizzy Dollers met to hear the lesson on Gerber babies. The ladies brought some of their dolls to share with the group.

Gerber babies are classified as an advertising doll and were introduced as a cloth doll in 1936. They were available for 10 cents and three Gerber labels.

Gerber babies have molded hair with a top knot and sleep eyes. Several styles were brought to display: a couple of 1972 baby dolls made by Amsco Company; two babies, one black and the other, white, which were produced by the Atlantic Novelty Company. They came in blue, red or yellow checked body suits and were 50th anniversary dolls with "floating" flirty eyes.

Other dolls that were shared included a hand painted porcelain Gerber doll and a 12 inch vinyl collector Gerber doll in original clothing in a beautiful white eyelet lace gown. The ladies that didn't own a Gerber doll brought some of their favorite baby dolls to share.

Rita Bentley showed pictures and told of a recent trip she took along with her daughter-in-law and granddaughters to the American Girl Place in Chicago, Illinois. She also brought "McKenna," an American Girl doll she purchased. McKenna is a doll made for just this year, 2012.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 9 at 1 p.m. at Horizon Bank. The lesson will be on inexpensive or garage sale dolls that have been fixed up and re-made. Since summer is such a busy time, this will be the last meeting until September.
