WAUNETA, Nebraska -- Loyd G. Campbell, age 96, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at Heritage of Wauneta in Wauneta, Ne.
He was born Oct. 27, 1915, in Gretna to William Lewis and Emma (Pahmeyer) Campbell. His family moved to the Trenton community in 1930, where he graduated from high school in 1935.
Loyd entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and served in World War II on the Hawaiian Islands until 1945, when he was honorably discharged.
Loyd was a farmer and he worked at local gasoline service stations.
He was a member for 65-plus years of the American Legion Stellges-Baker Post No. 337 in Trenton. Loyd was a lifetime member of the Hitchcock County Historical Society. He spent many hours working at the Hitchcock County Museum. Loyd was a member of the Trenton Cemetery Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Emma; brothers, Frank and William; and nephew, Jimmy Campbell.
He is survived by his brother, Fred Campbell of California; three nieces, Kathy (George) Hock of Culbertson, Nebraska; Rita (Robert) Johnson of Kearney, Nebraska; Mary (Mike) Payne of Lawrence, Kansas; three nephews, George (Eunice) Campbell of Manchester, California, Royce (Joan) Campbell of Columbus, Nebraska; Paul Campbell of Culbertson; four great-nieces, ten great-nephews and many great-great nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Hitchcock County Historical Society.
Graveside services will be Saturday, March 3, 2012, 1 p.m. at the Trenton Cemetery with Father Gary Brethour officiating.
Visitation will be Friday, March 2, 2012, from 1 - 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.
