McCOOK, Nebraska -- Verle Dale Francis died Thursday, Feb.23, 2012, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska, at the age of 90.
He was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Dundy County, Nebraska, the son of the late Claude and Vera (Harrison) Francis. He graduated from high school at Red Cloud in Webster County, Nebraska, in 1942. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
On April 27, 1942, Verle married Dolores Barnes at Smith Center, Kansas. They moved to McCook in 1969, where he spent the remainder of his life.
In 1947, he was employed by the Burlington Railroad in the building and bridge department before transferring to the communications department. He earned his ham radio license and was a member of MARS. He retired in 1983.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Keith Francis and Craig Francis and one daughter, Kathy Taylor; three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores of McCook, one daughter, Eloise Thornton and husband, Dean of Charlston, Kansas, and one son, Leland Francis and wife, Lois of Wilson, Kansas; 10 grandchildren and 24 great- and greatgreat-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of The Nazarene in McCook, with Terry McCorkle officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook..
