GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska --Sarah A. Myers, 88, of Cairo, Nebraska, died Saturday, Febr. 11, 2012, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island,.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m.Tuesday at the Cairo United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Visitation was today at the Cairo United Methodist Church.

Apfel Funeral Home of Cairo is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Ann (Thomas) Myers was born Fe. 1, 1924, near Cairo in Hall County to Robert and Olga (Luhn) Thomas.

Survivors of the immediate family include three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bill Zahl of Stratton, Nebraska, Louise and Jim Ford of Cairo, and Leanne and Jim Whetstone of Kearney, Nebraska; one son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Rhonda Myers of Cairo; one sister, Virgie Ernstmeyer of Wood River; and one brother, Henry Thomas of Wood River.

Additional survivors include one son-in-law, Ron Hargens and his wife, Linda; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Brendan and Trina Zahl of Monument, Colorado, Travis Zahl of Higginsville, Missouri, Marci and Aaron Sis of Atwood, Kansas, Kelsi Zahl of Los Angeles, California, Martin and Staci Hargens of Cairo, Monica and Brent Madsen of Hebron, Nebraska, Aaron and Carey Ford of Omaha, Nebraska, Byron and Anne Ford of Cairo, Heather and Dan Piersol of Lincoln, Jared and Hillary Myers of Olathe, Kansas, Brian Whetstone and Brook Whetstone both of Kearney; 15 great-grandchildren, and one on the way; numerous nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

Sarah grew up near Cairo and began her education at District 59 Mount Pleasant School. At the age of seven, her family moved west of Cairo, where she attended District 62 White Cloud School. She had a gift for learning and tested out of the fifth grade; she took her seventh and eighth grade exams at the Liederkranz in Grand Island and then attended high school in Cairo. She graduated from Cairo High School as the Salutatorian of her class in 1941. She then attended the Grand Island Business College and graduated with a bookkeeping degree in 1942.

She was an active 4-H member in her youth as a member of the Cairo Farm Lassies, and at the age of ten served as a 4-H club council member.

Following her education, she worked as the bookkeeper for Central Chevrolet, and later for Roush Motor Company.

On October 25, 1946, Sarah married Franklin Myers. They made their home on a farm south of Cairo. Sarah got involved in civic affairs, serving on the Mayfield Township Board until it was dissolved and also served on the elections board.

She served as a 4-H leader for 25 years, was a member of the Happy Homemakers Extension Club, Cairo United Methodist Church and Cairo United Methodist Women, and the Order of Eastern Star.

Sarah enjoyed gardening, flowers and sewing. She especially enjoyed watching her children's and later grandchildren's sporting events, and enjoyed horseracing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Franklin in 1988, and her daughter, Laura Hargens in 1999.
