CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska -- Darrell Dean Davis, age 79, of Cambridge, died at the Cambridge Manor of the TriValley Health System on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011.
He was born in Warnego, Kansas on March 26,1932, to Gerald J. and Wilma P. (Kietzman) Davis. Darrell grew up in Alma, Kansas where he graduated from Alma High School in 1950.
Darrell served in the United States Air Force from February of 1952 through January 1956. He was trained as a Flight Traffic Specialist. Darrell attained the rank of Staff Sargent prior to his discharge.
On Oct. 8, 1955, he was united in marriage to Shirley Corum at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Shirley preceded him in death on Aug. 23, 2000. Darrell graduated from Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia, Kansas in 1959 with a Bachelor of Art Degree in Business Management.
Darrell and Shirley moved to Cambridge prior to graduation in 1957, to manage the Cambridge Coop. Later, Darrell purchased the Trenchard Phillips 66 filling station. He returned to Farmland Industries and managed the McCook Equity for several years to get his 25 years of service. Upon his retirement from Farmland he opened Triple D Service in Cambridge. On June 1, 2002, Darrell married Nyla (Diephenbrock) Gehrt.
Darrell was a member of the Lions Club, American Legion and the Cambridge Fire Department. Darrell officiated football for a time. He enjoyed following Cambridge sports and his grandchildren's events. Darrell was always willing to lend a helping hand to others, either by a meal to stranger in need or even scooping snow for the elderly during the winter, before going to work.
Darrell was preceded by death by his parents; wife, Shirley, and granddaughter, Deanna Jo Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Nyla Davis of Topeka, Kansas; one daughter, Jill Davis-Haussl of Elwood, Nebraska; four sons, Jeff and wife, Lori of Lexington, Nebraska, Jay of Alexandria, Virginia, Jon and wife, Cindi of Alma, Nebraska and Joel and wife, Shawna of Hays, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Dennis and wife, Evelyn Davis of Alma.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cambridge at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, with Pastor David Feddern officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery of Cambridge, Nebraska.
Memorials may be left in Darrell's name at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge to either the St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society. Friends may leave online condolences at lockenour.com.
