Wave a flag, wipe a tear

Friday, November 11, 2011

Students at McCook, Nebraska, Elementary School pay tribute to America's veterans during the school's annual Veterans Day program Friday morning, reciting poems and singing patriotic songs to the 40-some veterans who gathered on their Commons Room stage. Several of the veterans, music teacher Kathy Latta and more than a handful of the adults in the audience wiped away tears as the children -- including kindergartner Jersey Green, and second graders Payton Mader, Kailynn Rodewald and Amalia Almanza -- shared their heartfelt messages of thankfulness and pride. The program ended with grins and giggles, however, as all 450-plus students, teachers and staff participated in a spontaneous, flag-waving, red-white-and-blue, "Grand Ol' Flag" "flash mob" to thank veterans for keeping their country and home safe and free.

  • One of the reasons so many of us remain proud of our hometown no matter how long we've been gone.

It is still amazing to stand, right hand over heart, and pronounce ones devotion to a great nation under an even greater God.

I was left in wonder though, we take such great pride in uplifting our veterans, and on another side, we do not take notice of the teachers that stand in the background, silently praising the children they guide and teach each passing year. Their minds, views, thoughts, and opinions touch more lives than any media source could ever imagine.
